Browser Tab Audio Recorder FAQ
How do I record audio from a browser tab?
Open this page in Chrome or Edge on a computer and press Start recording. In the sharing window, choose the tab that is playing sound, keep Share tab audio ticked and press Share. Recording starts at once and the level meter shows the sound coming in. Press Stop recording, or Stop sharing in the browser bar, and the recording appears in your list to play, rename or download.
What audio format are recordings saved in?
Recordings are made as WebM audio with the Opus codec at 64, 128 or 256 kbps, a small file that plays in browsers and most media players. Choose WAV before you download to get an uncompressed 16-bit WAV file, converted in your browser, that opens in any audio editor. WAV works for recordings up to 30 minutes. Safari records the microphone as M4A.
Do I need to install a browser extension to use this tool?
No. The recorder runs on this page with no extension. It uses the screen sharing built into the browser (getDisplayMedia) to capture a tab's sound, which Chrome and Edge support on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS. Firefox, Safari and phone browsers cannot share tab audio, so there you can record your microphone instead.
Why does my tab recording have no sound?
Share tab audio was not ticked, or a window was picked instead of a tab. Press Start recording again, choose the tab and make sure Share tab audio is on. A muted tab, or a tab with nothing playing, also records silence. The level meter shows when sound is coming in.
Can I record a browser tab and my microphone at the same time?
Yes. Open More options and turn on Add my microphone. The tab's sound and your voice are mixed into one recording, which is handy for calls, webinars and commentary. Let the other people on a call know you are recording.
Are my recordings uploaded or saved anywhere?
Nothing is uploaded. Recording and WAV conversion happen in your browser, and recordings are kept in this browser's storage on your device, so they are still here after a reload until you delete them. Clearing this site's data removes them.
